QoQ vs YoY: What They Mean
Published Last updated By FinDocAnalyzer
QoQ compares a quarter with the immediately preceding quarter, while YoY compares it with the same quarter in the previous year.
QoQ is useful for understanding recent momentum, but it can be affected by seasonality. YoY controls for many seasonal effects and is often more useful for comparing the same reporting period across years. Use both where available, and read the company's explanations for exceptional movements.
Check the reporting context
Identify the company, period, standalone or consolidated basis, currency and units before comparing figures. A six-month cumulative figure is not the same as a single quarter. Trace material values to the original statement and its notes.
Use the original filing as the source of truth. FinDocAnalyzer can help organize figures, summaries, and comparisons, but its output is educational and should be checked against the source document.
